Don't miss our ICND Boot Camp June 4-8, 2012!

OK, OK, that is not entirely true. A blog is an opportunity to make the human element of your company shine by sharing behind-the-scenes stories. For instance, how do we keep students happy and motivated for an entire day at Panurgy while plowing through logical functions and array formulas? Our secret is our well-stocked snacking area! Fresh coffee brewing all day, bagels from Burlington Bakery, biscottis, a dozen different types of teas, and much more...

As you share your behind-the-scenes stories, you'll realize that your blog is also a great opportunity to escape the formal, sanitized tone of your web site. Instead you can write in a conversational tone that is bound to be more engaging than your typical press release! Check out Zappos CEO and COO Blogs to see how Zappos executives engage readers.snack area

But the most important thing to remember is that your blog is a place to share, not to sell. By sharing resources, you'll showcase your expertise and strengthen your credibility. Burlington-based Seventh Generation's 7Gen Blog is a good illustration.

Now you are left wondering how you'll start your blog without a web developer at hand... No worries, there are free, simple tools available for you to start! Even giants such as Ben & Jerry's use the free platform tumblr. Tumblr is ideal if you plan on posting mostly photos.  If you are looking for more flexibility and customization, try Wordpress, another fast-growing open-source platform. This is what Nokia did!

How training saved Gateway millions!

I was just talking to Angie about one of our training classes and we got on the subject of why some people within organizations jump all over training and others do not.  We have a really great customer who is offering Office training to their entire organization.  We run multiple private classes per week and we have noticed that it is the same people that are taking advantage of the training opportunity.  When we ask about expanding the student base we typically get the same answer 'I am too busy, I have too much "work" to do...'.  Well before I purchased Panurgy I held a senior leadership position at Gateway computers.  Each Friday my team had to send me an Excel spreadsheet with sales number, and activity reports.  I then had to compile that to a single report and send that to my manager, who had to do the same work and send to our CFO.  On average I would spend 4 hours per week compiling these reports, my managers would spend an entire day and the sales team would spend 2-3 hours.

There had to be a better way!  This was 2001-2002 so Office 2000 was recently launched.  I suggested Excel training for the entire business team. That request was met with resistance from a senior VP who thought taking a sales team out of the field for a day was a huge waste of money.  I chose to beg for forgiveness and decided to roll out training for my team (1/2 of the business team in the US).  Within a week we saw a dramatic decrease in the time spent compiling these reports.  The time I spent went from 4 hours to 15 minutes.  We designed a smarter spreadsheet, incorporated Pivot Tables and trained everyone on how to use the application.  This single training enabled our sales and management team to spend an extra 3-4 hours per week in front of our customers, doing meaningful work.  One estimate was this was saving or making the company an extra $2 million per quarter!

What did the company learn from that?

1.     If we are using software tools, and by nature isn’t all software just a tool?  Then we need to train everyone who is going to use it on the features and functionality.

2.     We needed to make the training mandatory.  There was always an excuse as to why someone could not go to training.

3.     Chances are we were not the only organization trying to solve this issue and there must be a better way.

4.     By taking away the cut and pasting tasks assigned to managers we could better service our customers.

It is hard to believe that April is less than 2 days away and we are already planning for kids summer camps. (especially since we are supposed to get a foot of snow tomorrow)  Anyway Panurgy is hosting 2 weeks of computer and technology camp for kids.

This should be a really fun and informative camp where kids will learn how to take cool digital images and manipulate them with various photo editing software, they will be able to sell things on EBay and learn other things relating to our high tech world.

This camp is open for kids between the ages of 9 and 15.  The 1st session is running from August 15th to the 19th, and the 2nd session runs from the  22nd to 26th.  Kids can take one or both sessions.

I am working on an awesome SharePoint site for a great customer of ours.  It started out small and how has over 150 users and 150 GB of available space.  The more I use and administer SharePoint the more I come to like it and the collaboration capabilities.

Virus alert from McAfee

A new Internet worm dubbed "Here You Have" is streaming into worldwide inboxes, offering a dangerous payload, according to McAfee Labs. The worm, which travels via spam email with the subject line of "Here you have," or "Just for you," masquerades as an email with a link to a video or an attached document file. However, the email actually contains a link to a malicious program that can disable security software and send itself to all the contacts in the recipient's address book.
Corporations around the world were particularly affected by the worm on Thursday as it clogged up their email systems. Consumers could be affected as they go home and log onto their machines. For this reason, McAfee Labs has labeled the worm as a "medium" risk, and warns all computer users to delete any email with the "Here you have," or "Just for you," subject line.
Although the dangerous link has been taken down, neutralizing the threat, it can still spread through remote machines, mapped drives and removable media, Labs warns.
If you have an up-to-date and properly configured McAfee security software product then you are protected against this threat.
The Hook: You receive a spam email with the subject line "Here you have," or "Just for you," and a link or attachment that looks like it leads to a video or document file. It may appear that the email comes from someone you know.
The Methods: The email invites you to click on the link, and once you do it prompts you to download a file. This file is actually malware that disables the security software on your machine and sends itself to everyone listed as a contact in your address book.
The Dangers: Once you are infected, your computer has diminished security protection. Your machine is also being used to spam your friends and contacts. If you are on a corporate network, the network could be clogged as the worm works its way through address books.
Bottom Line: Do not click on the link in any email with the subject header "Here you have," or "Just for you," even if it appears to be from someone you know.
